Points

All speeding tickets and moving violations issued in New York carry points. As a rule, if you can avoid the points, you definitely want to. As a Southampton Lawyer, I am able to almost always have the points reduced for my clients.

Those who chose not to challenge their tickets often face license problems, increased insurance premiums and driver assessment fees imposed by DMV starting at $300 and increasing with the amount of points imposed.

Below is a list of traffic infractions often issued by the Southampton Police, and the points corresponding to each. The New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law contains many more different offenses, however this a short list of the tickets most often written in Southampton.

When a motorist is convicted of a speeding ticket or moving violation in New York State, points will be placed on the motorist’s New York State driving abstract. While the points are not added to the driving record until the motorist is convicted, Motor Vehicle looks to the date of violation, not the date of conviction, when determining how many points, or speeding tickets a motorist has received in the last 18 months. Motorist that have received tickets adding up to 11 points or more, within an 18-month period, and who were subsequently convicted of these violations face a DMV license suspension. Motorist who receive three speeding tickets within 18 months will have their license revoked for 6 months if the motorist is convicted of all three.
